The Wood Whisperer of Limpopo

Thomas Mafemani Kubayi listens intently - not to words, but to wood. Each grain, each knot, each weight tells him a story, whispering its secrets through texture and tone. For him, carving is not just an act of creation, but a process of revelation.

"It comes from your heart—you can’t explain it," he says. "When I create a sculpture, I am writing a song, not in music, but with my hands."

For Thomas, each piece of wood has a unique voice. Teak, he explains, resonates with deep echoes, much like a drum, while the dense, slow-growing Leadwood produces a tighter, more controlled sound. It’s this ability to listen - to truly understand his materials - that sets him apart.

A Legacy in Wood and Wisdom

More than just an artist, Thomas is a mentor, a father figure to the next generation of sculptors. His passion for passing on knowledge led him to establish the Vutsila School for the Arts, where he nurtures young creatives, teaching them not only the technical skills of sculpture but the philosophy of the craft.

His own journey began early. Born in 1972, he was inspired by his father, a skilled carver who created functional pieces with quiet precision. By the age of 11, Thomas had already picked up the tools of the trade, shaping small wooden figures that captured the essence of life around him. It wasn’t long before he realised that his hands held something special - a gift that needed to be shared.

His breakthrough came in 1989 when he started selling his work after being mentored by legendary Limpopo artists Jackson Hlungwani and John Baloyi. These encounters deepened his understanding of wood as a medium for storytelling, spiritual connection, and cultural preservation.

The Sound of the Trees

For Thomas, carving is more than sculpting; it is a dialogue between artist and material. He speaks of wood as though it were alive, describing its weight, its scent, and - most fascinatingly - its sound.

"Different types of wood sing differently," he once told the Safari Sourceress, with the quiet wisdom of a man who has spent a lifetime listening. His fascination with the way density affects sound is palpable, revealing a craftsman who doesn’t just shape wood - he understands it on a profound level.

He coaxes each timber’s voice to the surface, cutting away the excess until the story emerges. It’s an intuitive process, one that can’t be rushed or forced. "You have to let the wood tell you what it wants to be," he says.

          An Experience Unlike Any Other

For those seeking a deeper connection to the spirit of Limpopo’s art, visiting Thomas’s home studio is a journey worth taking. Here, amidst the scent of freshly carved wood, one can witness the delicate dance of hand and chisel, the rhythm of creation unfolding in real time.

The Ribola Art Route, where Thomas and some of his students are based, is a treasure trove of creativity—a place where tradition and innovation merge, and where art is not just something to be admired but something to be experienced.

Visitors often leave not just with a piece of sculpture, but with a story, an understanding, and a renewed appreciation for the artistry hidden in nature itself.

“When we emerged, we began to climb the thread – it was the thread of the sky! Yes, my friend. Now up there in the sky, the people up there, the spirits…they sing for me so I can dance” says Old K’xau, a !Kung shaman in Edward and Cathelijne Eastwood’s book, ‘Capturing the Spoor’.

And we can see it too in ochre paint, emerging from the rock face are three Shamans transformed into humans with animal heads, faces upturned towards a string of light coming down from the sky. They are bleeding from the nose and have ochre smears across their bodies where the ‘n/om’ or supernatural potency has been activated at the base of the spine.

Nearby, slim Kudu appear to be climbing out of the cracks in the rock from the spirit world behind it. We feel as if we have stepped back in time as we stand beneath this sheltered sandstone overhang with our guide, Jonas Tlouamma who has brought us here to see these precise and beautiful San paintings.

The Makgabeng Plateau lies south of the Blouberg and west of the Soutpansberg, near the town of ‘My Darling’ in the North-west of Limpopo Province. Rising 200 metres above the bushveld, the Makgabeng stretches over a distance of 250 square kilometres and most of this is uninhabited.

On the Ribola Art Route around Elim in the Vhembe district, visitors will be mesmerised by the creativity and talent of artists whose skills have been handed down through many generations

The Ribola Art Route in Limpopo is a self-drive guided route that takes visitors into the home galleries of Tsonga (Shangaan) and Venda artists around Elim in the Vhembe district. The name Ribola comes from the distinctive peak which juts out in the Soutpansberg mountains, southeast of Louis Trichardt.

We meet Betty Hlongwani, our guide, at the busy crossroads in Elim, which is jammed with taxis and buses and the inevitable skorokoro being push-started in the rush-hour traffic.

The art route is not new, explains Hlongwani. Venda artists, as they were dubbed somewhat misleadingly, rose to fame in the 1980s when the art world “discovered” the likes of Jackson Hlungwani, Phineas Mativandlela, Phillip Rikhotso, John Baloyi and Noria Mabasa, who exhibited their work across South Africa and in galleries in Europe, Japan and the US. These artists taught and trained a new generation – some of whom we will see – and they, in turn, have passed on their skills.

The artists we visit were hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, but are being helped with marketing by Love Limpopo, which promotes immersive experiences in the area.

We are doing a whistle-stop tour, but visitors can also do immersive experiences such as sculpture and pottery workshops, fabric painting and traditional cooking.

We set off for Mbokota village and our first stop, Twananani Textiles. One of the oldest projects on the route, it was started in 1983 with about 29 women who wanted to create jobs and preserve local creative traditions by producing tablecloths, cushion covers, beadwork and household accessories.

One of the original founders, Florence Ngobeni, says the project makes both batik-style cloth with Tsonga designs and symbols, and traditional block prints. The printing blocks and hand drawings are used together with candle wax on fabric, which is then hand-dyed or painted and made into clothing and homeware, often embellished with traditional beadwork.

Ngobeni shows us the workshop and adjoining shop, which offers wares for sale to tourists, hotels and lodges, and to locals for special occasions. There are now only eight women left in the project, she says. Young people are more interested in phones and tech than traditional culture.

Twananani Textiles shares premises with the Khomanani Preschool, a creche that cares for the village children. Colourful murals adorn its walls on the outside – one depicts Bart Simpson reading a Xitsonga book, symbolising the pull between past and present.

A bird made from metal pliers sits atop the funky signpost that welcomes us to the home of Pilato Bulala, who has become famous for his “scraptures” – sculptures made from scrap metal. Bulala displays his art on a table outside under thatch.

He works as a part-time mechanic and sees his creations in the flotsam and jetsam he collects. An old gas cylinder is fashioned into a ball for a dung beetle to roll; a hammer is turned into a bird’s body; a wire spring becomes a monkey torso.

Bulala began making small cars and big statues – like the one of Archbishop Desmond Tutu outside his house – but then decided the works needed to be smaller so they could be sold and easily transported.

His work is also a contemporary commentary. His “scraptures” feature Caster Semenya, Rosa Parks on a whites-only bench and Jesus on the cross. There is also a bust made with bolts, screws and nails, which he calls Mechanically Minded.

Like most of the artists here, Bulala’s business was nearly destroyed by the absence of tourists for nearly two years during the pandemic. He relies on social media to market his art and has recently been given a card machine to facilitate sales.

Thomas Kubayi’s home and gallery is a fantasy land of wooden figures and creatures that stand against the blue skies and soft hills of Tshivhuyuni village. Kubayi is one of the more established artists along the Ribola Art Route. He is working on a new building when we arrive, and greets us in overalls with a great big darling of a smile.

He learnt his woodcarving skills from his father Johannes, he says, and in turn he has taught young emerging artists in the area. He forages in the nearby mountains and forests for wood to use, especially kiaat, silver terminalia and leadwood. He is inspired by traditional mythology and he also plays music and paints.

The roof of his gallery was partially destroyed by recent hard rains, but he shows us inside. There are elongated figures, long fish and wooden instruments such as guitars, drums, xylophones. We fall quiet as we feel the magic of his astonishing ability to hew art from wood; we hear the whispers of ancient spirits and ancestors in the sculptures and figures.

Kenny Nonyana, who lives nearby, is a pupil of Kubayi, and he and his dog Vin greet us and invite us to sit under a mango tree. We chat as he quickly carves a dolphin from a piece of old firewood, following the lines of the wood and its natural shape. Using a blade made from a car spring and an old bicycle frame, Nonyana’s precision is remarkable. He specialises in elegant, elongated figures, but also makes small wooden buttons and jewellery.

We stop for lunch at Caesar’s Place, a simple wood and thatch building that offers respite from the heat. Oscar cooks us chicken on an open fire, which we enjoy with pap, chakalaka and cabbage, plus the obligatory 2-litre Coke served in plastic wine glasses.

It’s hard to miss Mukondeni Pottery, which we visit after lunch. The shed-like building is surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands, of clay pots. Small pots, big pots, long pots, round pots, tall pots. Enormous pots evoking Arabian Nights, plain pots awaiting colour and pattern, finished pots baking in the sun, their graphite finishes shining.

Inside the main building, we meet three gogos who are coiling pots and applying finishes. Piles of wet clay lie under blankets and in the corner is a massive kiln, recently donated by humanitarian organisation World Vision International, waiting to be fired up once load shedding is over. In a large open-sided building outside, we wander among huge pots and watch a woman take hers to be fired in a traditional open fire pit.

Started in 1977, Mukondeni is a women’s empowerment project that teaches and preserves the local pottery traditions. The women’s work is legendary in these parts – you can see it in homes and hotels across the province. But this project, too, is struggling to get young women on board (only 14 women work here now, compared with more than 30 a few years ago) and battles with admin and logistics.

“My sculptures are born from dreams and ancestral spirits,” says Venda artist and traditional healer David Murathi, who is the last stop on our route. He lives on the outskirts of Mashau village in the Levubu Valley and learnt wood carving from his late uncle, Churchill Madzivhandila, while he was still at school.

The idea of an African art gallery in Hoedspruit might seem unconventional at first. After all, the town is known for its conservation efforts and breathtaking landscapes.

But we believe that art and culture are just as essential to the identity of a place as its natural wonders. Our new studio and gallery is a celebration of Limpopo’s artistic talent, a space where stories come alive through creativity.

Limpopo is home to a wealth of artistic traditions, from woodcarving to beadwork and beyond. These art forms are more than just crafts; they are expressions of identity, history, and community. By providing a platform for local artists, we hope to preserve these traditions while also encouraging innovation and contemporary interpretations.

As part of our long-term vision, we are collaborating with LOVE LIMPOPO and Safari Sourceress to showcase the Ribola Art Route, a journey through the province’s artistic and cultural history. With their 25 years of experience and established relationships with artists, they are the go-to experts for exploring this rich cultural heritage.

Safari Sourceress will also actively engage with other artists and community projects to tell the story of Limpopo’s cultural art scene.

Our vision extends beyond the gallery walls. We dream of creating a venue that serves as a hub for creativity in Hoedspruit. Picture a space where art classes are held under the shade of ancient trees, where private functions are adorned with the works of local artists, and where creatives from all walks of life can gather to share ideas and learn from one another.

This vision is rooted in our belief that art has the power to transform communities. By investing in local artists and providing them with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, we can create a ripple effect that benefits the entire region.

Art has the potential to uplift, to educate, and to inspire, and we are committed to harnessing that potential for the benefit of Limpopo’s communities.

We are excited to embark on this journey and invite you to join us. Whether you are an art enthusiast, a conservationist, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of storytelling, there is a place for you in our gallery.

Hoedspruit is a town celebrated for its conservation efforts, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts from around the globe.

Yet, amidst the focus on preserving nature, the rich cultural heritage of the surrounding communities often fades into the background. Our new African art gallery seeks to address this gap by creating a platform where art and culture take center stage.

Art has the unique ability to connect people. It tells stories that words often cannot, fostering understanding and empathy across different backgrounds. The artists we work with come from rural communities in Limpopo, each with their own tales to tell.

Through their work, they capture the essence of their culture, offering a fresh perspective on life in this beautiful part of South Africa.

As the first contemporary pop-up gallery in Hoedspruit, we are pioneering a movement that bridges conservation and culture. Our mission is to ensure that the communities surrounding Hoedspruit are not left behind in the town’s growth and development. By showcasing their art, we hope to bring their stories to light, fostering a sense of pride and belonging.

In addition to our ongoing efforts, we are excited to announce our collaboration with LOVE LIMPOPO and Safari Sourceress to showcase the Ribola Art Route. With 25 years of deep involvement in the province, they are the leading authorities on this art route and have cultivated meaningful relationships with local artists.

Safari Sourceress will be collaborating with other artists and community projects to explore and tell the story of Limpopo’s cultural art scene.

Looking to the future, we dream of expanding our space to include art classes, creative workshops, and even private functions. Imagine a space where conservationists, artists, and visitors come together to learn, create, and share ideas. This fusion of creativity and conservation could become a model for other towns in South Africa and beyond.

We invite you to be part of this journey. Visit our gallery, meet the artists, and immerse yourself in the stories that make Limpopo such a unique and inspiring place. Together, we can celebrate the rich tapestry of life that makes Hoedspruit more than just a conservation hub.

Nestled in the lush landscapes of Limpopo, Hoedspruit is renowned for its breathtaking wildlife and conservation efforts. But beyond the safaris and game reserves lies a vibrant cultural tapestry that often goes unnoticed.

Our new studio and African art gallery is here to change that narrative. As the first contemporary pop-up gallery in Hoedspruit, we aim to shine a spotlight on the diverse artistic talents of Limpopo Province, celebrating the stories and traditions of its people.

Art has always been a powerful medium for storytelling. It transcends language and culture, offering a glimpse into the soul of a community. The artists we work with carry the legacy of their ancestors, embedding history, mythology, and everyday life into their creations. From intricate carvings to bold contemporary pieces, every artwork is a testament to the resilience and creativity of Limpopo’s communities.

Our gallery is more than just a space to showcase art; it’s a bridge between conservation and culture. Hoedspruit is a town deeply rooted in its commitment to wildlife and environmental preservation.

However, we believe that preserving the cultural heritage of the surrounding communities is just as vital. By bringing their stories to the forefront, we hope to create a harmonious balance where both nature and culture thrive.

          A Living Tradition

The women of Mukondeni have long been the custodians of this sacred craft, passing down techniques refined through time. Their pots, adorned with intricate geometric designs in rich red and black hues, are not just objects; they are the storytellers of a people. The patterns, etched with ochre and graphite sourced from the land itself, speak of ancestry, ritual, and daily life.

The process is as mesmerising as the final product - clay gathered from the earth, shaped with skilled hands, and left to dry before being fired in an open blaze. This open-fire method, a defining characteristic of Mukondeni pottery, gives each pot its distinct texture and resilience. These pots are not only functional, used for cooking, storage, and ceremony, but they are also artistic expressions of cultural heritage, deeply rooted in the identity of the Venda people.

          Trailblazing Women of Mukondeni

The story of Mukondeni pottery is also the story of the remarkable women who dared to dream beyond tradition. Years ago, a group of visionary women came together, recognising the potential of their craft not just for daily use but as a means of economic independence. In a time when opportunities for rural women were scarce, they took bold steps to shape not just clay but their own futures. Their efforts helped preserve an ancient tradition while creating sustainable livelihoods for their community. Today, each pot remains a singular reflection of the hands that have shaped it—no two are ever the same.

"There’s something magical about watching a Mukondeni pot take form—each movement of the hands leaves behind a piece of its maker's spirit. These women have been creating works of cultural significance for generations, and now, at last, the world is catching up. More than ever, people are beginning to see the value of craft, not as fine art, but as something equally profound—a living testament to skill, resilience, and heritage.

I feel deeply connected to women who take those bold, sometimes terrifying steps to uplift themselves. The Venda potters of Mukondeni embody resilience, artistry, and self-determination. Each pot tells a story of strength, history, and community—fired in the open air, shaped by tradition, and carried into the future. It’s a privilege to witness and share their work with the world. Go, girl power!"

But the magic doesn’t stop there.

Every cabinet comes with more than just art—it comes with a story. To ensure that the richness of Limpopo’s culture is conveyed to every visitor, we offer a complementary storytelling workshop for lodge staff.

This workshop equips staff with the knowledge and skills to narrate the stories behind the art, providing a deeper connection between visitors and the land they’re exploring.

Imagine being a visitor, opening one of these intricately carved cabinets.

The polished surface gleams with the warmth of tradition, but it’s the stories behind the items that truly bring them to life. Through storytelling, visitors aren’t just purchasing a piece of art—they’re taking home a piece of Limpopo’s soul. This connection fosters a greater appreciation for the province’s rich cultural heritage, ensuring that its legacy is celebrated and preserved.

The term "kaross" originally describes a traditional cloak made from sheepskin or other animal hides, often worn by the Khoikhoi and Bushmen (San) peoples of southern Africa. These garments typically feature the hair left on the skin and were historically significant in the region. Today, the concept of the kaross has evolved, with the brand Kaross focusing on creating sustainable employment opportunities for rural women through the production of handcrafted textiles.

Each piece is a testament to the skill and artistry of the artisans, making them not just functional items but also works of art. The brand emphasizes the importance of preserving traditional techniques while providing modern home décor solutions.

In the heart of Tshivhuyuni Village, near Elim, Pilato Bulala sees magic where others see scrap. A self-taught artist, he transforms discarded metal into whimsical "scraptures"—mystical birds from pistons, traditional women from crankshafts, and even purple polka-dot flying machines.

This self-taught sculptor doesn’t just recycle—he reinvents, transforming scrap into striking "scraptures" that blend creativity, culture, and craftsmanship.

Pilato doesn’t just see scrap; he sees stories waiting to be told. A rusty wrench becomes the silhouette of a giraffe, bicycle chains morph into mystical fish, and pistons find new life as birds. His process is both intuitive and intentional, fueled by an unshakable curiosity and a deep respect for materials others might overlook.

David Murathi is a master woodcarver whose work reflects the deep cultural roots of the Venda people. Born and raised in Tshakhuma, a village in the heart of South Africa’s Limpopo province, David’s art is an extension of his heritage, his family traditions, and his personal connection to the land.

His artistic journey began in his youth, when he learned the craft of woodcarving from his father and later, his famous uncle, Churchill Madzivhandila. This inheritance of skill is a vital thread in the fabric of Venda culture, where craftsmanship is passed down through generations, keeping the stories and traditions alive.

David’s woodcarvings are more than just beautiful sculptures—they are a visual language through which he communicates the dreams, myths, and rituals that shape the Venda worldview. His pieces range from strikingly expressive human forms to functional art that brings traditional symbolism into everyday life. Whether it’s a towel rail, a key ring, or a sculptural mirror, David’s functional art always sparks interest. "

"I still remember the first time we installed one of his face hooks—people couldn’t stop asking about it. It’s incredible how he blends practicality with artistry, creating pieces that serve a purpose while honouring the spirit of Venda craftsmanship."

There’s something magical about the way David interacts with the wood. He lets the natural shape of the material guide the creation of each piece, resulting in works that seem to grow from the wood itself, echoing the connection between nature and the ancestral spirits. His sculptures often explore themes of spirituality, social issues and cultural narratives. From a woman offering traditional beer to an elder, to a dancer embodying the serpent-like form of the Domba Dance, each sculpture tells a story, revealing the soul of the Venda people.

But what truly sets David apart is his voice—a rich, honeyed tone that seems to resonate with the very essence of the earth. When you hear him speak, you feel at home, as if you’ve been invited into a world of warmth, wisdom, and tradition. He’s not just a skilled artist, but a respected traditional herbalist, drawing from the healing powers of nature and the wisdom passed down from his ancestors.

Visiting David’s home studio in Ha-Mashau is one of the most profound Love Limpopo experiences you can have. Tucked in the lush Levubu Valley, it’s a place where the pulse of Venda culture and the spirit of the land come together. There, you can witness David’s creative process firsthand, explore his sculptures up close, and even purchase a piece of his work to take home—a tangible connection to the deep cultural rhythms of Venda.

David Murathi’s work is more than art—it’s a bridge between the past and the present, a way to keep the ancient cultural wisdom of Venda alive for future generations. His sculptures are a testament to the power of art to preserve and celebrate heritage, to tell stories that might otherwise be forgotten, and to inspire a deeper understanding of the world around us.

Kenneth Nonyana’s sculptures speak in a language of wood and soul, carving out narratives that resonate deeply with the rhythms of life in Limpopo. His artistry has evolved from raw, unrefined expressions into a sleek, polished, and undeniably distinctive style. His signature techniques - hundreds of tiny dots, meticulously crafted scales, and intricate lines - create a texture that is both ancient and modern. Each sculpture is more than a piece of art; it is a story, a truth captured in wood.

Born in 1992 in Limpopo, Kenneth Nonyana’s journey into sculpture was profoundly shaped by the mentorship of master carver Thomas Kubayi. Inspired by Kubayi’s ability to merge tradition with innovation, Kenneth honed his craft, developing unique techniques and tools that define his work today. His early pieces, marked by urgency and raw emotion, have transformed into works of striking technical mastery and deep expression.

Kenneth’s sculptures bridge the past and the present, echoing ancestral wisdom while reflecting contemporary struggles and triumphs. His figures, carved with painstaking precision, offer a glimpse into the inner dialogues we all experience- honest, unfiltered, and profoundly human. His work embodies the essence of African storytelling, preserving history while shaping the future of contemporary wood sculpture.

Kenneth Nonyana’s work has captured the imagination of The Safari Sourceress, whose gift lies in discovering Africa’s most compelling artistic voices. In his sculptures, she finds more than wood, she sees echoes of ancient spirits, the pulse of contemporary Africa, and a future sculpted with bold intention. His place as a finalist in the prestigious Vuleka Art Competition signals his growing influence, but it is his presence on the Ribola Art Route that truly defines him. Here, in the heart of Limpopo’s creative landscape, his work weaves seamlessly into the broader story of African art, bridging tradition and transformation in a way that is both powerful and deeply personal.

Kenneth is more than an artist; he is a visionary, a custodian of heritage, and a pioneer of African artistic expression. His sculptures stand as testaments to his belief: "There is nothing we cannot do in life... everything is possible." With each chisel stroke, he brings this vision to life, pushing the boundaries of wood carving and redefining African contemporary art.
